In the introduction to the catalogue of the artist's 2004 monographic exhibition at the National Museum in Warsaw, Anna Prugar-Myślik wrote: "It is difficult to determine precisely when he began painting his first lyrical, color-saturated compositions with crayons and gouache on thin tissue paper. They are composed of a set of soft and geometric forms, with lines forming a harmonious whole. Sometimes the structure of the ground, serving as a schematic background, is visible. This constitutes a new quality of the painting. The mechanical method of creating the background justified the artist's own calling them frotages. These small compositions, sometimes the first record of a painterly concept, faithfully reflect Janikowski's sensitivity and personality.".
